It seems like having reliable
smudge-proof eyeliner is indeed very handy even for girls who are trapped in a
chaotic and dysfunctional world. A no-smudge eyeliner helps boosts ones
confidences in the face of trials.
During the holidays, I
finished all three books in Veronica Roth’s best selling Divergent trilogy and
it is pretty amazing that among other things that bonded the main character,
Tris to her best friend, Christina is Christina making Tris look more girly
through a make-over. The trilogy tells about the life of Beatrice, better known
as “Tris” and her life in a dystopian experimental area called “Chicago” which
implements a caste-like system wherein they divide the populace according to
their main human virtue – the Abnegation who are selflessness, the Amity who
believes in peace, the Candor who exhibits honesty, the Dauntless people who
are supposed to be brave and the Erudite who are intelligent and smart. The
assumption is all people can belong to only one of the five groups and people
who exhibit tendency to have more than one are called “Divergent” and are
shunned from society. Tris is born from Abnegation parents but it was later on
revealed that she is a Divergent. During the choosing ceremony, the ritual
wherein each 16-year old will choose their faction, she chose to transfer to
the dauntless faction, leaving her family and her old life. There she met her
new friends and of course, the love of her life – Four or Tobias. All the
while, the heroine tries to hide the fact that she is “Divergent” until she
found the courage to use the same as a catalyst for societal change towards a
new age.
As I mentioned, there
are remarkable and heart-warming moments wherein Tris and Christina showed that
improving ones physical appearance could help a girl even in unfathomable
situations. In Divergent, the first book of the trilogy, after Christina
applied, I assumed a smudge-proof eyeliner in her eyes, Tris felt a surged of
confidence. The effect of the no-smudge eyeliner made the transition and her
new life felt more real. She feels that she can finally move on to her new
life, a new beginning. To quote, “looking at myself now isn’t like seeing
myself for the first time; it is like seeing someone else for the first time.
Beatrice was a girl I saw in stolen moments at the mirror, who kept quiet at
dinner. This is someone whose eyes claim mine and don’t release me; this is
Tris.” Isn’t it awesome that a simple cosmetic wonder like a no-smudge eyeliner
can make a lot of difference in our perspectives?
In another example, in
the second book, Insurgent, before going to war, Tris and Christina sat down
for another makeover session. Tris teased Christina for bringing her make-up
kit containing her lipstick, blushes and most probably smudge-proof eyeliner.
Christina simply replied, “Yep. Figured it be harder for anyone to shoot me if
they saw how devastatingly attractive I was.” The statement might be a joke
since no one cares who you look in a chaotic situation but those tiny tubes of
lipstick and no-smudge eyeliner seems to give her strength and humor during
wartime.
The story goes on
unraveling details that mirror how their society is dysfunctional. We might not
live on a society wherein destruction is as evident as in the Roth’s fictional
Chicago but we do face the same challenges. When we go to an important meeting
or on a special date, looking good gives us the advantage we need to make the
best of our situation.
Handy smudge-proof
eyeliner, cool shade of lipstick and the perfect blush are tools that are easy
to find and use. The market is brimming with no-smudge eyeliners and the likes
which over you instant gratification. However, we should also be smart in
choosing the smudge-proof eyeliner we will use. Check the ingredients and the
formulation. A lot of companies offer smudge-proof eyeliners and other
cosmetics that are free of chemicals and harmful elements.
A bad day will surely go
away with the right smudge-proof or no-smudge eyeliners. As they say, beauty is
confidence.
